Does exactly what it says on the (comic book) tin. Loved it.
  • Little Miss Sunshinerating
Very funny, disturbing (the beauty pageant) and completely messed up -- but in a good way.
  • Laputa: Castle in the Skyrating
Story great, characterization a little on the weak side -- though the big robots are cool.
  • Porco Rossorating
    Stylish, funny, exciting.
  • Grave of the Firefliesrating
Very sad, which was a little unexpected since I didn't know much about it before watching it. Can be a little too slow in places though, otherwise it's very good.
  • Nausicaä of the Valley of the Windrating
The story can get a little dense at times what with the various factions, but still really enjoyable, inventive and engaging.
  • X-Men: The Last Standrating
Opportunity, talent, money - all blown. Over 3 films X-Men has hinted of something great that could have been, this last one says "No, sorry - not going to happen". Bah.

The Strong Are Saying Nothing

The soil now gets a rumpling soft and damp,
And small regard to the future of any weed.
The final flat of the hoe’s approval stamp
Is reserved for the bed of a few selected seed.

There is seldom more than a man to a harrowed piece.
Men work alone, their lots plowed far apart,
One stringing a chain of seed in an open crease,
And another stumbling after a halting cart.

To the fresh and black of the squares of early mold
The leafless bloom of a plum is fresh and white;
Though there’s more than a doubt if the weather is not too cold
For the bees to come and serve its beauty aright.

Wind goes from farm to farm in wave on wave,
But carries no cry of what is hoped to be.
There may be little or much beyond the grave,
But the strong are saying nothing until they see.

Robert Frost (1874 - 1963)

Car Crash

In the end the feeling of power around me was all I could remember: but as I slide sideways into the path of that blue BMW it all seemed like slow motion.

Braking, too much - in a skid, release, over steer, correcting, gliding as if on ice on a hot sunny day, over correcting.

I'm flung sideways across the car as she hits passenger side first. My arm breaks at the point of impact. Pieces of glass spin gracefully past, perfectly in time like little syncronised swimmers.

My car barrel rolls over the BMW. I am flying through the air, just like I always dreamt I could. I feel like my breath is being held for me, but it's the steering wheel in my chest. The sky turns dark then light then dark again. There are more sycronised swimmers spinning around before me, some are blood red, but they are all so pretty.

The force that held me lets me go, my eyes fill with blood, sound is muffled, the dream slips past me and in time I hear hissing and tearing metal.

We are but men

The Tenacious D song ‘Tribute’ is so very funny. Jack Black dancing/thrashing is very, very funny - you can get the full video at http://www.tenaciousd.com/video/tributefullvid_300.asx (A pox on windows media format I say).

This is just to say

I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox and which you were probably saving for breakfast.

Forgive me, they were delicious, so sweet and so cold.

Monkfish

While I was away I met a nice bunch of people, mostly from England (which seems paradoxical) some of which liked to use the word ‘Monkfish’ quite a lot. Now, Monkfish are not one of God’s most aesthetically pleasing creatures (as this link will show) so to be compared to one is a bit of a shock at first. Still, I would like to say hello to Emma, Vicster, Alex, Victoria, Sam, Kyle and Lizzie.

Achoo Lietuva

I have spent the last 8 days helping with the building of a log cabin in Zemaitaija National Park, Lithuania. It wasn't far from perfect I have to say, beautiful people, beautiful scenery and a 1400 Watt Skilsaw choppin' up 2x4's...

For the next short while I will bask in 'log cabin in wilderness' bliss, then I will read my email and come back to earth with a huge bump.
