Well Read? Me?

Of Larry McCaffery's "20th Century's Greatest Hits" I have read 1 and ¾. The Great Gatsby and ¾ of Heart of Darkness It has been pointed out to me before that I am not a great reader but I didn't think I was this bad, but I didn't even recognise half of those titles. Woops. Better visit the library. Or, I could go play tennis...

Bah. Those types of lists are totally subjective. For instance, I think Virginia Woolf is one of the most over-rated female writers ever, Toni Morrison is a close second , I’ve heard “Midnight’s Children” is just dreadful, and of everything William Burroughs did, this guy picks the friggin’ Nova Trilogy?

To each their own. People usually make lists like this because they are pretentious and want to show off how many books they’ve read.

That was a weird list, filled with the pseuds picking what they think should be worthy books.

But, having said that, I have read 75% of them. I was (and still am) a voracious reader.

And, erm, Emily, I loved the Nove Trilogy. I guess it is a what-was-going-on-in-your-life-at-the-time sort of book, that elevates it above his others.

I thought about it good and hard, I considered outright lying or practicing a subtle deception, but I’ve plumped for the truth. I haven’t even read 100 books. But in the spirit of illiteracy here are my 5 favourite books:

TWAIN: The adventures of Huckleberry Finn
(How I wanted my childhood to be and in the end how my childhood actually felt)

TOLKEIN: The Hobbit (The best fantasy ever written IMO)

MACLEAN: A River Runs Through It (Poetic, beautiful and resonates strongly with my own family - fly fishing presbyterian father, 2 brothers, one needs want the other can’t give)

FITZGERALD: The Great Gatsby (For romantic, not telling here reasons)

COOPER: The Last Of The Mohicans (He’s a Mohican, and he’s the last one! Heroism, tragedy and romance - I have a soft spot for all three…)

Does exactly what it says on the (comic book) tin. Loved it.
  • Little Miss Sunshinerating
Very funny, disturbing (the beauty pageant) and completely messed up -- but in a good way.
  • Laputa: Castle in the Skyrating
Story great, characterization a little on the weak side -- though the big robots are cool.
  • Porco Rossorating
    Stylish, funny, exciting.
  • Grave of the Firefliesrating
Very sad, which was a little unexpected since I didn't know much about it before watching it. Can be a little too slow in places though, otherwise it's very good.
  • Nausicaä of the Valley of the Windrating
The story can get a little dense at times what with the various factions, but still really enjoyable, inventive and engaging.
  • X-Men: The Last Standrating
Opportunity, talent, money - all blown. Over 3 films X-Men has hinted of something great that could have been, this last one says "No, sorry - not going to happen". Bah.
