The Red Hand of Ulster

That'd be the Red Hand of Ulster then. I was doing a grahic for some Lithuanians, Vytis (a knight on a white horse) and got to thinking about my own iconography. Now, all I know about this thing can be found on this page, that and it appears on the flag of Northern Ireland. Oh yes, and on the gable walls of a few houses round these parts. But I don't think we should let the ignorance of a few thugs intimidate us into giving up on these things.

Here, if you want it, is a scaleable copy [EPS] of the Red Hand image above.

Your soul is worth £9318. For your peace of mind, 81% of people have a purer soul than you.

It came as no surprise.

Hmmm

That went in the wrong place

Pardon me if this is a stupid question, but do the two Biblical references cited by the website you linked to have anything to do with (what I presume to be) the Star of David also being on the flag?

Incidentally, a few years back, cities began converting crosswalk lights to pictures (terrible arguments errupted over the ultra un-PC “Walk/Don’t Walk” lights of yore - think of the poor illiterate and non-English speakers who might not understand). The don’t walk sign is a red hand, just like the one above. I think of Ulster every time I cross the dirty boulevard.

Stephen said on Thu 11 Sep at 22:46:

I’m not an expert but I believe the six pointed star on the Northern Ireland flag simply represents the six counties. I don’t think it has anything to do with the Star of David, but I could be wrong.

I think the Red Hand is pretty cool, Ulster Rugby has probably helped it’s image a lot.

Emily said on Thu 11 Sep at 23:47:

And that doesn’t infuriate the “But…but…Ulster has NINE counties!” crowd?

Stephen said on Fri 12 Sep at 09:27:

Well, Northern Ireland only has 6 counties, and the Red Hand is there as a symbol of our Irishness, under the crown - not really meant as a strict represntation of Ulster. It’s often confused though.

However, simply being on this island offends ‘that crowd’ so there isn’t much you can do really.

Anyone here who believes that they are part of the lost tribe of Israel needs their head felt. I know people who believe it and I’ve told them to have their head felt.

You may be great and all, but you ain’t getting head-feeling privileges.

It is all true, I tell ya. I am heading off to Meath with a spade to dig up the Ark.

See you in the funny papers!

I have to say, i love the red hand of ulster as a flag. Its excellent for conveying a sense of patriotism. Not so much with a sense of irishness but, that of Being an Ulsterman, and British at the same time which is not a contradiction. This idea of Ulster being seperate from the other three provinces isnt a new phenomena over the last few years. It existed prior to the plantation.

Alan said on Tue 21 Oct at 22:58:

The Irish flag was commisioned by King George V. The red hand comes from Irish folklore about Heremon O’Neill who was racing another cheiftan to claim Ireland as their own land. The winner would be the first to place their right hand on the soil. O’Neill realised that he was loosing the race decided that being left handed he didn’t need his right hand. Grabbing his sword he chopped his hand off and threw it to the beach and therefore claiming Ireland as his. The red hand being O’neills bloody hand. The star is not from Isreal and has nothing to do with jacob’s twins. But The star represents the six counties just like the stars on the stars and stripes represent the fifty states of America. And the Royal crown was from King George V.

Sparticus said on Tue 3 Feb at 01:06:

The so-called Irish who now reside in the Irish Republic have for many many years been attempting to destroy Ulster as a seperate entity within the island of Ireland. They have created a false religion, they have written false histories, they have murdered men, women and children alike all to destroy Ulster. They are believers in myth with no substance of truth.

Disregarding religion most of the Ulster people are practically one race, they need to throw aside those Irish colonialists and build their own nation that has remained hidden for thousands of years.

Sparticus: Wrong, all wrong. Your comment is an example of Fantasy Irish History, a game played by many.

I think Sparticus is saying the Protestants (“those Irish colonialists”) are false. Hard to say really as Sparticus doesn’t make much real sense.

Does exactly what it says on the (comic book) tin. Loved it.

Very funny, disturbing (the beauty pageant) and completely messed up -- but in a good way.

Very sad, which was a little unexpected since I didn't know much about it before watching it. Can be a little too slow in places though, otherwise it's very good.

The story can get a little dense at times what with the various factions, but still really enjoyable, inventive and engaging.

Opportunity, talent, money - all blown. Over 3 films X-Men has hinted of something great that could have been, this last one says "No, sorry - not going to happen". Bah.
